Every few months or so there’s a new health rage that people are excited to try. Sometimes, these new health fads are short-lived and at other times they become so popular that they never lose their devoted followers. Using saunas for their health benefits is a centuries’ old tradition. Historically speaking, saunas were heated through steam. These days, there is more than one way to heat a sauna. If you’re interested in trying an infrared sauna as part of a holistic health therapy treatment, here’s what you need—or want—to know:
Are Infrared Saunas Safe?
The short answer is yes. The infrared rays used in saunas do not pose any threat to our bodies like ultraviolet or x-rays. There are, however, inherent dangers to handling all types of saunas. With just a little bit of knowledge and some preparation, you can enjoy your sauna experience without any threat to your health or safety.
Remember that saunas are designed to heat your body, so it’s important to be aware of the risks of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and dehydration. Do not consume alcohol before your appointment as this can lead to rapid dehydration. Do not step into any sauna if you’re sick. Despite the relative safety of infrared saunas, you can still overdo it by not giving yourself enough breaks or spending too long in the sauna. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your appointment and be sure to rehydrate every 15 minutes or so while in the sauna.
How Do You Prepare for Your Sauna Session?
Before stepping into the sauna, make sure you’re completely hydrated. Do not consume alcohol or drugs before your appointment. Wear loose-fitting clothes or one of our complimentary towels. The more skin that is exposed, the better. If you’re taking medication, consult with your doctor before your appointment to make sure that it’s safe to use infrared light therapy.
What Are the Health Benefits?
While the health benefits of infrared saunas still need to be studied on a larger scientific scale, small studies have shown that infrared saunas provide many health benefits for people who have rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, poor blood circulation, muscle spasms, and stiffness. It has also been used to detoxify the body from alcohol, drugs, and other chemicals. Many of our clients use infrared saunas to promote weight loss.
Does My Insurance Cover Infrared Therapy?
Ask your HR department if your group insurance covers alternative therapies like infrared sauna therapy. Generally, basic coverage does not include infrared treatment. However, RelaxZone offers very affordable rates for 30-minute sessions.
