Wintertime is hard on the body. From frozen toes to fogged up glasses to treading oh-so-carefully across dangerously slippery sidewalks—life isn’t easy in the winter. But beneath all those layers of wool and down, your skin is also going through a tough time. Harsh winds, pelting snow, and sub-zero temperatures aren’t friendly to your sensitive skin. This winter, protect your most fragile organ by giving your skin a little extra TLC.
Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
In cold weather, the moisture from our skin evaporates much faster. The wind and cold, dry air is not friendly to your skin’s natural oils. Indoor heating can also make your skin feel dry and cracked. The only way to combat dry and chapped skin is to apply moisturizer day and night, which will create a natural barrier against the elements. And remember, one of the best and easiest ways to hydrate your skin is to drink plenty of water!
Apply Vigorous Amounts of Sunblock
Sunscreen is probably the last thing you’re thinking of right now, but we cannot stress enough how important it is to protect your face from the sun. It’s false to believe that the sun is only damaging when it’s hot outside. Its harmful rays are present all year long, and the reflective snow only amplifies its effects. The UV radiation is increased on the ski slopes, making sunblock even more imperative.
Be Gentle on Your Face
Winter is not a time to be vigorous with your face-washing regime. Over-exfoliation at this time of year can significantly dry out your skin and lead to breakouts. You should be as gentle to your cheeks and forehead as the wind is harsh:
- Use a gentle exfoliator no more than once a week.
- Use moisturizing lip-balm with beeswax, which protects your lips from the wind.
- Try to avoid dehydrating lip stains.
- Wear sunglasses, a scarf, and a hat. The softer the fabric, the better it is for your skin.
Get a Facial!
Winter is a surprisingly good time for a facial. It provides a deep cleanse, removes bacteria, oil, and dirt, and leaves your skin feeling tight and refreshed.
